Happy Women’s History Month; we all, men and women, have come a long way in the past two generations. If you are going to National TESOL in Philadelphia March 28-30, please stop by my booth #901 to say Hi.

February 2012 Monthly Teacher's Guide

Feb 06, 2012 - 0 comments

Welcome to the hot month of February. If it isn’t hot outside, at least it’s hot in the primary states this month. On page 6, I’ve included a time chart of events to happen before a new president takes office. There’ll be articles in future issues of EEN on political parties, issues, the final nominees, and the electoral process.

Many new workers in the country do not realize that they might be entitled to a tax refund. If your students have jobs, mention that in February, they may get a W-2 form to show how much they earned in 2011, and how much tax was taken out. Next month, we’ll have one of the simpler tax forms for students to practice with.

January 2012 Monthly Teacher's Guide

Happy New Year! May all your resolutions be kept and bring great results. January is often a time that new students arrive, so one of the advantages of Easy English NEWS is that it is new each month, and the new students don’t have a sense of “coming in in the middle.” I choose difficult words to define in Word Help as though there were new students each month.

If you’re a new subscriber to Easy English NEWS, be sure to check out the additional tests at my Website each month: (Then search “cloze”.) There are six cloze tests based on the month’s articles, and one “Odd Man Out” (Which word does not belong?) vocabulary test. I don’t print answers as the cloze tests can be checked by referring to the newspaper, and the Odd Man Out may have more than one answer. The point in the Odd Man Out tests is to stimulate thinking and speaking skills. The student should be able to tell why the word he or she has circled doesn’t go with the other three words.

Happy holidays to you and all of your students. If you haven’t downloaded the free Holiday Song Book, it is available at my website. Eighteen traditional holiday songs, with the word help for each song at the bottom of the page.

November 2011 Monthly Teacher's Guide

Have you been using the cloze exercises available at my website? There are six of them each month, based on the text from Easy English NEWS. There are multiple uses for them, including reviewing, testing, dictations and collaborations. Students can self correct or correct each other’s work by going directly to the newspaper article that each cloze is taken from. /p>

There is also a which-word-does-not belong test with vocabulary from the current issue. I don’t post answers for these as there can be more than one right answer. The point is for the student to explain his or her reason for grouping three words and saying the fourth word does not belong. A good reason makes the students’ answer correct.
