May 2012 Monthly Teacher's Guide

May 07, 2012 - 0 comments

It’s nearing time to order Easy English NEWS for the next school year. Our prices will increase starting July 1. If you order for next year before June 30, you can order at this year’s prices.

For many subscribers, the May edition is your last issue of the year. The June issue will have important presidential election information and information about the conventions. June will have the final jobs topic-- “Starting your own business” as well as important holidays: Flag Day, Father’s Day, and the Fourth of July. Heroes and History will feature Nathan Hale’s role in the American Revolution. Consider ordering the June issue as a summer gift to your class for independent reading. You can also encourage your students to subscribe to Easy English NEWS on their own if they are leaving your classes, graduating, or going to another school. They might ask the local library to subscribe to it if it doesn’t have EEN available.

We need feedback to make plans for next year. There is a questionnaire at the website, or you may be lucky enough to find one in your package of newspapers. You can print it out and fax or mail it to us. Address below.

April! As it warms up, think about bringing your class outdoors to notice the trees, their buds, and other signs of spring along with the articles on Earth Month.

Happy Women’s History Month; we all, men and women, have come a long way in the past two generations. If you are going to National TESOL in Philadelphia March 28-30, please stop by my booth #901 to say Hi.

February 2012 Monthly Teacher's Guide

Feb 06, 2012 - 0 comments

Welcome to the hot month of February. If it isn’t hot outside, at least it’s hot in the primary states this month. On page 6, I’ve included a time chart of events to happen before a new president takes office. There’ll be articles in future issues of EEN on political parties, issues, the final nominees, and the electoral process.

Many new workers in the country do not realize that they might be entitled to a tax refund. If your students have jobs, mention that in February, they may get a W-2 form to show how much they earned in 2011, and how much tax was taken out. Next month, we’ll have one of the simpler tax forms for students to practice with.

January 2012 Monthly Teacher's Guide

Happy New Year! May all your resolutions be kept and bring great results. January is often a time that new students arrive, so one of the advantages of Easy English NEWS is that it is new each month, and the new students don’t have a sense of “coming in in the middle.” I choose difficult words to define in Word Help as though there were new students each month.

If you’re a new subscriber to Easy English NEWS, be sure to check out the additional tests at my Website each month: (Then search “cloze”.) There are six cloze tests based on the month’s articles, and one “Odd Man Out” (Which word does not belong?) vocabulary test. I don’t print answers as the cloze tests can be checked by referring to the newspaper, and the Odd Man Out may have more than one answer. The point in the Odd Man Out tests is to stimulate thinking and speaking skills. The student should be able to tell why the word he or she has circled doesn’t go with the other three words.
