Purpose
Easy English NEWS is a monthly newspaper for adult and
high school readers who are learning English. The purpose is to welcome
immigrants to the United States and to help them learn about their new
environment and society. Easy English NEWS is also suitable
for overseas students learning English as a Foreign Language, native-English
speaking literacy classes, and anyone else who would enjoy reading about
American cultural matters in a text with simple sentence structures
and a controlled vocabulary.
Readability
Easy English NEWS is written on a 3rd to 4th grade reading
level, but covers topics of interest to adults, especially immigrants
who want current, vital information to help them manage their new lives
in the United States. All materials are written by Elizabeth Claire,
or other expert ESL text writers (except for readers' stories). Difficult
words are boldfaced, with an asterisk. They are glossed in a Word Help
section, which contains from 150 to 180 words per month. Photos and
illustrations enhance understanding. Easy English NEWS
is printed in 12 and 14 point type to enhance readability by second
language learners.
Topics
A great variety of topics are covered, and there's something for everyone:
holidays, heroes, health, safety, citizenship preparation, national
and immigration news, consumer awareness, sports, culture, geography,
history, true stories by our readers, humor, idioms, editorials, puzzles,
proverbs, quizzes and more.
Classroom Use
Teaching aids are built into the newspaper for classroom or individual
use. Let's Talk About It section helps readers gather facts, express
opinions, and share culture. These questions encourage readers to think
critically about the readings and the impact on them as new members
of our society. Readers are invited to share their own culture and examine
the ways that different societies meet people's needs.
Interactive
Each month we publish 3 to 5 stories written by our readers. The stories
tell of immigrants' troubles, challenges, mistakes, and successes in their
new environment.
Cost
The newspaper is economical--and the larger your program, the less it costs.
Ordering is very flexible--you can
try it out for just a month, or tailor make your order for the months that
your program is in session.
